CULTURE
‘‘
Mauritius is a meeting place of many people, of many cultures, of many
civilisations.’’
Mauritius is proud of its reputation, being the most cosmopolitan island
under the sun. At different stages in the course of its history, people
of diverse origins – Indian
(Hindus and Muslims), African, European and Chinese – have come to the
island bringing with them their religions, cultures, languages, values and
traditions. The colour spectrum ranges from ebony black, to pink and
white, from chocolate brown to pale yellow, and all the nuances
in-between.
In its determination to foster a society based on fraternal cooperation
and mutual enrichment, Mauritius has successfully adopted a policy of
‘Unity in Diversity’. The country today is a recognized cultural melting
pot and is often cited as a perfect example of intercultural peace and
harmony.
Perhaps nothing can attest more joyfully to the mulicultural dimension of
Mauritian life than the procession of Hindu, Muslim, Chinese, and
Christian festivals throughout the year. Some of the festivals are
spectacular and awe-inspiring; others are solemn; others however are
colourful and provide an occasion for fun and frolic. Visitors are the
most welcomed.

La
Culture mauricienne
“
